Traveling in Colombia is one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. From vibrant cities to peaceful jungle escapes and Caribbean beaches, this country is full of surprises. If you’re planning a Colombia itinerary, this guide includes all the best places to visit in Colombia based on my personal route.
Here’s my honest take on where to go, what to do, and how each place felt.
Medellín

Medellín is one of the most dynamic cities in Latin America and a must on any Colombia travel itinerary. With its transformation from a troubled past into a tech-forward, art-filled city, it’s a place that surprises many travelers.
Top things to do in Medellín:
• Explore Comuna 13 for murals and community spirit.
• Take the cable car to Parque Arví for panoramic views and nature.
• Sample bandeja paisa, the region’s famous dish.
Travel tip: Medellín is perfect for digital nomads and longer stays as there’s reliable Wi-Fi, co-working spaces, and a huge expat community.
Guatape

Only a short trip from Medellín, Guatapé is one of the most colourful towns in Colombia. It’s known for its bright houses and nearby monolithic rock, El Peñol.
Best things to do in Guatapé:
• Climb El Peñol Rock (740 steps) for breathtaking views.
• Wander through town admiring the zócalos, they are artistic panels on every building.
• Enjoy a boat ride on the lake for a peaceful escape.
• Or like me go paragliding over the lake, its stunning.

Cartagena

Cartagena is a mix of heat, history, and high energy. Its well-preserved colonial old town and coastal location make it one of the best places to visit in Colombia.
Things to do in Cartagena:
• Stroll the Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
• Watch the sunset at Café del Mar.
• Take a boat to Islas del Rosario for turquoise waters and snorkeling.

Tayrona National Park

Tayrona National Park is where jungle meets beach in the most magical way. The hike is sweaty but scenic, and the beaches are wild and mostly untouched.
Tayrona travel tips:
• Start early to beat the heat and crowds.
• Swim only at designated beaches (strong currents!).
• Pack light, bring mosquito repellent, and enough water.

Minca

Tucked into the mountains, Minca is a laid-back jungle village perfect for escaping the coastal heat. It’s ideal for nature lovers and backpackers.
What to do in Minca:
• Visit waterfalls like Marinka or Pozo Azul.
• Tour a coffee or cacao farm.
• Enjoy mountain views from eco-lodges or hammocks.

Absolutely. I travelled solo and felt mostly safe. Though, like anywhere, you need to stay aware, especially in big cities at night. The people are warm, public transport is good, and the mix of landscapes is unbeatable.
If you’re planning a trip to Colombia, this route gives you a bit of everything: culture, nature, adventure, and beach time. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
